TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY
Professor María Herrera-Sobek, our Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Academic Policy, will be taking a sabbatical year in 2012-13. I am pleased to announce that Professor Anna Everett has graciously agreed to serve as Acting Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Academic Policy, effective July 1, 2012.
Associate Vice Chancellor Herrera-Sobek has provided exemplary leadership for our campus, and we look forward to her continuing contributions in this role when she returns in June of 2013. She will be using her sabbatical to finish writing her book on Constructing Race and Nation: La Llorona, La Malinche and the Virgin of Guadalupe in Chicano/a Cultural Production.
Dr. Everett, Professor of Film, Television, and Media Studies, is a former department Chair and the current Director of Graduate Studies for our Department of Film and Media Studies. From 2002 to 2005, she was the Director of our Center for Black Studies. She has a distinguished record of service to our campus community, including serving on the Chancellor's Coordinating Committee on Budget Strategy, the Operational Effectiveness Subcommittee and Steering Committee, the Information Technology Subcommittee, the Academic Senate's Committee on Committees, the Underrepresented Student Recruitment Drive, the Humanities AAU Task Force, and many campuswide search committees. She has received numerous recognitions for her research and teaching achievements, including the 2001 Harold J. Plous Award, a UC President's Fellowship Award, two Fulbright Senior Scholar Awards, and the 2009 Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Book for her monograph Digital Diaspora: A Race for Cyberspace.
This position is most important to our campus in every aspect, especially in diversity, equity, and academic policy, and we are grateful to María and Anna for their joint efforts to ensure seamless leadership. Please join me in thanking them sincerely for their dedication to our university. We extend our best wishes to María for a productive time of research as she departs on her well-deserved sabbatical.
