June 27, 2025
Dear Members of Our Campus Community,
As I announced to our campus on March 6, Margaret Klawunn has decided to retire at the end of this academic year after 10 years of outstanding leadership and dedicated service as our Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
We are forming a search advisory committee for our next Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
Following consultation with our Executive Vice Chancellor, Academic Senate Chair, administrative and staff colleagues, and students, I am pleased to announce that Michael Miller, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Enrollment and Success, has graciously agreed to serve as our Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, effective July 1, 2025.
As Associate Vice Chancellor, Michael is a member of the Student Affairs Executive Team, overseeing 13 units that provide student enrollment services and programs that foster academic achievement and success. Michael has over 20 years of experience in student services that provide essential student needs for financial aid, housing, and other basic needs, as well as leading teams that provide academic support services, including Campus Learning Assistance Services, Disabled Students Program, Education Opportunity Program, and Career Services. He has been a strong advocate at state and federal hearings for student service needs of the UC system. He was awarded the Margaret T. Getman Service to Students Award in 2016 and 2022.
Michael previously served as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Services, overseeing all aspects of student recruitment, admissions, financial aid, registrar, and enrollment services. From 2009-2015, he served as Director of Financial Aid. As Director, he designed and implemented innovative programming, including the Promise Scholars Program, the UCSB Financial Crisis Response Team, and the UCSB Scholar Retention Program, as well as serving as campus lead for the Global Food Initiative and Healthy Campus Network programs.
Michael, an enrolled member of the Skokomish Indian Tribe, serves as Campus Consultant to our campus’s Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) project, assisting our campus with our NAGPRA efforts to return ancestral human remains and cultural artifacts to local Native American tribes, and served as UC Santa Barbara’s Repatriation Coordinator from 2021-23. He is also a veteran of the United States Army.
We appreciate Michael’s longstanding dedication to our campus and especially our students. Please join me in thanking him for his willingness to help ensure a smooth transition for our Division of Student Affairs and our campus. Please also join me in extending our heartfelt thanks and best wishes to Vice Chancellor Klawunn for her dedicated commitment and countless wonderful contributions to our campus community.
Sincerely,
Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
