August 1, 2024
Dear Members of Our Campus Community,
As I announced to our campus on February 13, 2024, our University Librarian, Kristin Antelman, has decided to retire, effective July 31, 2024. I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank Kristin for her exemplary leadership of our Library and her many extraordinary contributions to our campus community.
We have already begun a national search for our next University Librarian, and a search advisory committee has been formed and was announced in my memo to campus on May 9. We are grateful to Professor Beth Digeser and the search advisory committee members for their dedicated efforts.
Following consultation with Executive Vice Chancellor David Marshall, the Academic Senate, administrative colleagues, and other members of our campus community, I am pleased to announce that Alan Grosenheider, Deputy University Librarian, has agreed to serve as our Interim University Librarian, effective August 1, 2024.
Alan has served as our Deputy University Librarian since 2012, providing leadership and program oversight of library activities associated with promoting overall library effectiveness, as well as serving as the proxy for the University Librarian. He also previously assumed the role of Acting University Librarian at UC Santa Barbara in 2017-18.
Prior to coming to our Santa Barbara campus, Alan served as the Associate University Librarian for Personnel, Administration, and Planning at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Library from 2010 to 2012. He was Assistant to the University Librarian at UH from 2007 to 2010. Alan began his career at the University of Washington Libraries, where he served as the Head of the South Asia Section from 2000 to 2004 and as the International Studies Cataloging Librarian from 1995 to 2000.
We are delighted that Alan is willing to assume the responsibilities of this important interim position, and we deeply appreciate his ongoing service to our campus.
Sincerely,
Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
