January 17, 2023

Dear Members of Our Campus Community,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ann Marie Musto as our next Associate Vice Chancellor of Human Resources and Chief Human Resources Officer, effective April 1, 2023.

Ann Marie comes to UC Santa Barbara with 26 years of experience in human resources from multiple sectors, including higher education, health care, and manufacturing. She has a proven track record of navigating and tackling organizational changes, executing strategic people priorities, developing and implementing data-driven solutions, and collaborating across a matrix of partners. A versatile leader with a team-building approach, she is dedicated to supporting our campus’s strategic goals through a commitment to promoting excellence, diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, collaboration, and learning.

Ann Marie joins our campus from Stanford University, where she has served since 2014 as the chief human resources officer for Residential and Dining Enterprises (R&DE), the university’s largest auxiliary unit. For two consecutive years in 2020 and 2021, she received R&DE’s Keith L. Guy Award for Exemplary Service, which recognizes staff colleagues for going above and beyond the call of duty in providing exemplary service, and in demonstrating a culture of excellence and a commitment to core values.

Previously, Ann Marie served as the human resources director at the University of Michigan from 2008-2014; the human resources director at Healthways from 2004-2008; a human resources generalist at the University of Toledo from 1999-2004; and a human resources specialist at Libbey lnc. from 1996-1999. Throughout her career, Ann Marie has focused on building partnerships and empowering teams – championing the service component of human resources, and creating environments where employees feel they are able to do their best work.

She holds a Master of Education in human resources development from the University of Toledo, and is a member of the Human Capital Institute, Society for Human Resource Management, Labor and Employment Relations Association, College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, National Human Resources Association, and the American Association for Access, Equity and Diversity.

I would like to thank Dana Mastro and Renée Bahl, co-chairs of our search advisory committee, and each of our committee members (listed below) for their excellent work on this rigorous search. I would also like to thank all of our colleagues who participated in the search process, and provided input and advice.

I also wish to extend my sincerest gratitude to Lisa Romero for her dedicated and outstanding service as Interim Director of Human Resources. She provided invaluable guidance and support to our campus during the particularly challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Please join me in extending our heartfelt thanks to Lisa for her numerous extraordinary leadership contributions.

Please also join me in giving heartiest congratulations and a warm welcome to Ann Marie from all of us at UC Santa Barbara. We look forward to the wealth of knowledge and experience she will bring to our campus in this important role.

Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
