January 9, 2023

Dear Members of Our Campus Community,
I would like to welcome you back to campus and the start of winter quarter, though I wish it were under different circumstances.

Due to the extreme rain and weather conditions, I am writing to inform you that following consultation with student leadership, Academic Senate Chair, Executive Vice Chancellor, Interim Dean of Undergraduate Education, Student Affairs, Administrative Services, and other campus leadership, we will be canceling classes through the rest of the day today, January 9, and all day tomorrow, January 10. The Academic Senate has already sent out a message alerting instructors. While the campus remains open and operational, circumstances around road closures and community evacuations have made it challenging to get to and from campus.

Information on the local evacuation order can be found at https://www.countyofsb.org/. Road closure information can be found at https://www.countyofsb.org/3675/Storm-Related-Road-Closures.

I appreciate that our instructors will be sending messages to students about rescheduling classes. Students with additional questions should contact their instructors directly for more information.

While the campus remains open and operational, we encourage supervisors to exercise maximum flexibility in allowing our staff colleagues who are able to work remotely for the rest of the day today, January 9, and tomorrow, January 10.

Campus events scheduled for today and tomorrow are continuing as planned, unless you are otherwise notified by event organizers.

As always, thank you for your flexibility as we work together to prioritize the well-being of our campus community. We will continue to monitor the situation throughout the coming days, and will communicate any necessary updates with you. Please be safe and take good care during this challenging weather.

Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
