July 5, 2018

Dear Members of our Campus Community,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Garry Mac Pherson as our next Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services, effective August 1, 2018.

Garry is currently the Associate Vice Chancellor of Environmental and Building Services at the University of California, San Diego, where he has served since 2009. In this capacity, he serves as a member of the Vice Chancellor’s leadership team and has responsibilities for strategic vision, leadership, and executive management oversight of major programs and services to the campus, medical center, and off-site facilities that impact substantial operations and resources. He is responsible for a portfolio of physical assets, including 10 million gross square feet of buildings, which includes the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the University of California, San Diego main campus, and two medical centers.

Garry also served as Director of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) and Director of Fire & Life Safety on the San Diego campus. As Director of EH&S, he directed the operations of seven divisional areas and represented the campus on all matters of regulation and compliance with local, state and federal agencies. As Director of Fire & Life Safety, Garry oversaw matters related to the construction and design of new and existing buildings. Prior to his nine years of service at the San Diego campus, Garry served in senior leadership roles in local government, including managing a Fire & Life Safety department in San Diego County. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Public Administration from San Diego State University.

I would like to thank the members of our search advisory committee, chaired by Dean Pierre Wiltzius, for conducting a rigorous national search for this important position. The members of the committee are listed below. I would also like to thank our Academic Senate; administrative, faculty, and staff colleagues; students; and many members of our campus community who provided important consultation, input, and advice throughout the search process. I am also deeply grateful for the dedicated leadership that has been provided by our Interim Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services Joel Michaelsen.

Please join me in welcoming Garry as our next Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services.

Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
