Dear Members of our Campus Community,

Following consultation with Executive Vice Chancellor David Marshall, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Margaret Klawunn, Interim Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services Joel Michaelsen, our Academic Senate, and other campus administrators and colleagues, I am pleased to announce the formation of the Chancellor’s Advisory Task Force on Childcare. This task force will assess the state of childcare on our campus and propose solutions with the goals of addressing short-term needs and developing a long-term vision.

The campus has benefited from the invaluable research and recommendations of the Campus Childcare Advisory Committee, the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women, the Academic Senate Council on Faculty Issues and Awards, and several campus offices. As we continue to increase enrollment and recruit faculty and staff in the next several years, it will be important to coordinate our efforts and to factor the availability of child care into our academic, budgeting, and capital planning process.

The Chancellor’s Advisory Task Force on Childcare will review current and future child care needs, consult with relevant campus offices, and advise the campus on strategies for helping faculty, students, and staff address those needs. In the short term, I have asked Maria Herrera-Sobek, Associate Vice Chancellor, Diversity, Equity & Academic Policy, Vice Chancellor Klawunn, and Cynthia Señeriz, Director of Human Resources, to consult with our colleagues about how best to implement a pilot backup childcare program. In the longer term, the task force will review multi-level solutions to address current needs and to discuss more long-term strategies.

The task force membership is listed below. We extend our sincere thanks to Professor Kum-Kum Bhavnani, Professor of Sociology, and Professor Henning Bohn, Chair of Academic Senate and Professor of Economics, for agreeing to co-chair this task force, which is so vitally important to our campus. We also thank all of the task force members for their commitment of time, wisdom, and expertise to help our campus address our childcare needs.

Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
