Dear Members of our Campus Community,

I am writing to announce that Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services Marc Fisher will be departing UC Santa Barbara to take the position of Vice Chancellor for Administration at UC Berkeley, effective September 18, 2017.

This is a wonderful opportunity for Marc, and we wish him the very best. We also thank himfor his leadership as our Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services and Campus Architect these past three years, and for his many contributions in various capacities on our campus over the past 15 wonderful years. He first joined UC Santa Barbara in 2002, following seven years at UCLA as Campus Architect and Director of Design. From 2002 to 2008, he served as our campus’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus Design & Facilities, and from 2008 to 2014 as Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services. In all of these roles, he has provided dedicated service to our campus community, helping us with our Long Range Development Plan and other planning efforts; managing the design, construction, and maintenance of our facilities; supporting campus safety, accountability, and sustainability efforts; and enhancing the services of our Administrative Services Division.

I am pleased to announce that Professor Emeritus Joel Michaelsen has graciously agreed to serve as our Interim Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services, effective September 18, 2017. As a UCSB alumnus and distinguished faculty member since 1982, Professor Michaelsen has contributed to our university in many ways over the years, including as Chair of the Department of Geography from 1991 to 1997, Chair of the Academic Senate from 2006 to 2010, and Interim Executive Vice Chancellor in 2014. He has chaired or served on a broad range of campus committees, including the Chancellor’s Coordinating Committee on Budget Strategy, Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Faculty and Staff Housing, Campus Planning Committee, Design Review Committee, Chancellor’s Campus Sustainability Committee, and many more.

I will be consulting with our Academic Senate and faculty and administrative colleagues to form a search advisory committee very shortly to help us conduct a search for our next ViceChancellor for Administrative Services.

Please join me in thanking Joel for his willingness to help our campus by taking on this important interim role. Please also join me in extending our warmest congratulations and thanks to Marc as he and his wife, Kris, prepare for this exciting next step in their lives.

Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
