Dear Members of our Campus Community,
I am writing to share with you that, following a resolution passed by our Academic Senate at the Faculty Legislature meeting of October 20, 2016, our campus has joined the Scholars at Risk (SAR) network. SAR describes their mission as follows:
“Scholars at Risk is an international network of institutions and individuals whose mission it is to protect scholars and promote academic freedom. By arranging temporary academic positions at member universities and colleges, Scholars at Risk offers safety to scholars facing grave threats, so scholars’ ideas are not lost and they can keep working until conditions improve and they are able to return to their home countries.”
Faculty, department chairs, and deans are invited to learn more about Scholars at Risk on their website at https://www.scholarsatrisk.org, and to consult the lists of scholars maintained by Scholars at Risk and the Scholar Rescue Fund for possible opportunities to hire scholars for visiting positions. I have the honor and pleasure of asking Professor Claudio Fogu to serve as UC Santa Barbara’s representative to SAR. Professor Fogu would be glad to provide information or answer questions; he can be reached at cfogu@frit.ucsb.edu.
Sincerely,
Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
