Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce the appointment of John Longbrake as our next Associate Vice Chancellor for Communications and Public Affairs, effective September 1, 2012.
This appointment is the result of a rigorous national search and recruitment process. I would like to thank Dean David Marshall, chair of our search advisory committee, and our committee members for their outstanding work. The members of the committee are listed below. I also would like to thank all the members of our campus community who participated in the search process, as well as the staff of our Office of Public Affairs for their valuable work during this transitional period.
John Longbrake comes to us from Harvard University, where he is currently the Assistant Vice President for Communications. Since 2005, he has worked closely with three Harvard presidents as well as senior administrators, faculty, alumni, students, and staff on multiple facets of Harvard's communications, marketing, media relations, and digital presence, including social media. Previously he was the Assistant Director of Public Affairs and Assistant Secretary for International Affairs at Yale University.
Before joining Yale, John worked in Washington, D.C., for eight years in various communications and public policy roles, including at the U.S. Treasury Department, where, among other responsibilities, he served as spokesperson for then-Under Secretary for International Affairs Timothy Geithner. John also served as Vice President for Communications and Congressional Affairs for the National Quality Forum, as Public Affairs Coordinator and Research Analyst for the Presidential Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses, and as Research Analyst for the U.S. Congress's Office of Technology Assessment. He holds a bachelor's degree from Vassar College.
We look forward to drawing on his experience and talents in order to strengthen our university communications and our collaborative efforts across campus to enhance awareness of UC Santa Barbara's leadership in research, education, and public service.
