TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Dear Colleagues:

After a decade of exceptional service to our campus, Gary Greinke, our Associate Vice Chancellor for Development and Executive Director of The UC Santa Barbara Foundation, will be retiring at the end of this month.

We are grateful for Gary's exemplary leadership of our Office of Development and his success in helping to generate unprecedented levels of philanthropic support for our campus. Since joining UC Santa Barbara in 2001, Gary has worked closely and effectively with our Trustees, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, community members, and friends, as well as with corporations and foundations around the world, in order to advance the educational, research, and service priorities of our campus.

Gary has built a strong and cohesive development team that works collaboratively with our vice chancellors, deans, directors, faculty, staff, and others to achieve our fund-raising goals and ensure UC Santa Barbara's excellence for future generations. In 2004 he helped us launch the public phase of The Campaign for UC Santa Barbara, the first comprehensive fund-raising campaign in the history of our campus. This campaign has raised more than $618 million to date, while also serving to greatly expand our network of donors and strengthen the culture of giving to UC Santa Barbara.

Following consultation with our Academic Senate and administrative colleagues, I will move quickly to appoint an Acting AVC for Development and Executive Director of The UC Santa Barbara Foundation, and to form a search advisory committee to conduct a national search for our next Associate Vice Chancellor for Development.

Please join me in extending our heartfelt thanks to Gary for his dedicated contributions to our campus community. We wish him and his wife, Julie, the very best as they prepare for this exciting next step in their lives.

Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
