TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to share with you the UC press release about the Regents’ approval this week of the final 2008-09 operating budget for our UC system. This press release can be found at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/article/18804.

A message from UC Office of the President, elaborating on what this budget means for our university community, can be found at http://atyourservice.ucop.edu/news/general/0810_salary.html.

As we all know, these are difficult budgetary times for our university, our state, and our nation. I appreciate the ongoing work of our Coordinating Committee on Budget Strategy, co-chaired by Senate Chair Joel Michaelsen and EVC Gene Lucas, to help communicate and work with our campus on these budget reductions. With your help and input, the committee has developed a set of planning principles for our campus, aimed at preserving the quality of our teaching and research programs and access for our students. These principles can be found online at http://chancellor.ucsb.edu/memos/BudgetPlanningPrinciples.pdf.

To our faculty, staff, and students, I want to say how much we appreciate your dedication to UC Santa Barbara and the important contributions you make here, each and every day. Our campus community has worked together to get through budgetary challenges in the past while maintaining our forward momentum. With your help, I know we will do so again.

 Sincerely,

 Henry T. Yang
 Chancellor
