TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Dear Colleagues:

After four years of outstanding leadership of our Division of Administrative Services, and more than 36 years of service to the University of California, Vice Chancellor Donna Carpenter has expressed her wish to retire, effective April 30, 2009.

I will be moving forward quickly to appoint an advisory committee to conduct a national search for our next Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services.

I am honored to have this opportunity to thank Vice Chancellor Carpenter for her countless contributions to our academic community. She has been a thoughtful and effective leader for the broad range of administrative services on our campus. She has provided wise advice and strategic support for our long-range planning efforts, including our student, faculty, and staff housing projects and the update of our Long Range Development Plan. She has led efforts to make us a more sustainable campus, and a safer campus as well, overseeing a multifaceted approach to emergency and disaster preparedness. She has helped all the members of our campus community work together smoothly and efficiently to fulfill our shared mission.

Donna has served as our Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services since May of 2006, and as Acting Vice Chancellor for the prior two years. Previously she was our Campus Controller and Director of Accounting Services. She first joined our Accounting Department in 1994, after 21 years at UC Riverside.

Please join me in congratulating Donna, and in extending our heartfelt thanks for her deep and sustained devotion to our university. She and her husband, Dennis, will always be a special part of our UCSB family, and we wish them the best as they prepare for this exciting next step in their lives.

Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
