TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Dear Colleagues:

I wrote to you in June with the good news of our appointment of Dr. Pierre Wiltzius as our next Dean for the Division of Mathematical, Life, and Physical Sciences in the College of Letters and Science. I am now pleased to let you know that Dean Wiltzius’s first day on campus will be this Wednesday, October 1.

Dr. Wiltzius has been serving as the director of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the Beckman Institute in 2001, he was at Bell Laboratories from 1984 to 2001. He holds a Ph.D. in physics from E.T.H. Zurich, and spent two years here at UC Santa Barbara as a postdoctoral research fellow in physics, from 1982 to 1984. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Senior Member of the IEEE. In 2001 he received an R&D100 Innovation Award from R&D Magazine for printed plastic display circuits.

We are delighted that Dr. Wiltzius accepted our invitation to hold the Susan and Bruce Worster Chair for the Dean of Science, and to join the faculty in our Department of Physics as well. We look forward to working with him, and we welcome the energy, talent, and inspiring vision that he brings to this important leadership role.

Please join me in welcoming Dean Wiltzius and his wife, Ann, to our UCSB family. Please also join me in extending our heartfelt thanks to Acting Dean Steven Gaines for his exceptional leadership and service.

Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
