TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to share some good news regarding our San Clemente Graduate Student Housing project. I am very pleased to inform you that all approvals to move forward with this project have been received, and bids have been awarded. We expect to begin construction this month, and look forward to the completion of this project in two years.

The San Clemente Graduate Student Housing complex, to be located in Isla Vista on our Storke Campus, will provide a mix of housing options to meet the needs of our campus community, with 166 four-bedroom apartments, 151 two-bedroom apartments, and 10 studio apartments. Our primary goal is to provide much-needed housing for our graduate students, but we expect that the benefits from this project will extend to our entire campus.

We are very pleased that there will be a 1-to-1 match of 976 parking spaces to 976 beds. If not all of these parking spaces are needed by the residents of San Clemente, we look forward to being able to use excess parking spaces to accommodate the needs of our students who reside in the Isla Vista community.

The project will also improve Storke Field and provide some support space for recreation. A new field north of Lot 38 is still awaiting Coastal Commission approval, but is planned to be part of the San Clemente project. We will continue to strive to be good neighbors in our community, and look forward to helping make improvements to the roads, utilities, and other infrastructure that will support this project.

I want to thank all of our students, faculty, and staff who have worked so hard during the past five years to make our dream of this new housing project a reality for our campus.

Sincerely,
Henry T. Yang
