TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Bill Bean as our new chief of police, effective immediately.

Chief Bean has been serving as acting chief of police for the UCSB Police Department since 2003. He has a distinguished 30-year career on the force, first joining our police department as an officer in 1975 and advancing through the ranks as sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and assistant chief of police.

He has consistently demonstrated not only a deep insight into the principles of community-oriented policing, but also a sincere commitment to their practice within a diverse university campus and adjacent community. His very high standard of professionalism and long-term dedicated performance make him an ideal choice for this important leadership position.

I extend my sincere thanks to Professor Joel Michaelsen, chair of our search advisory committee, and to each of the committee members listed below for their hard work and wise counsel throughout this process. I would also like to thank Acting Vice Chancellor Donna Carpenter, administrative colleagues, the Academic Senate, and other colleagues who provided input and advice, as well as all of the members of our campus community who took the time to meet with candidates at one of our open forums.

Please join me in offering our warmest congratulations to Chief of Police Bill Bean.

Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
