TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Dear Colleagues:

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management. The School has been blessed by a very high level of philanthropic support – especially the generosity of Donald Bren – as well as the leadership of two excellent deans and the contributions of outstanding faculty, staff, and students. In 2002, we celebrated the grand opening of Bren Hall and its LEED platinum rating, certifying it as the greenest laboratory building in the United States.

I would like to thank Dr. Dennis Aigner for his excellent leadership and service as Dean of the Bren School since 2000. During his leadership:
·        the School has grown to include 19 faculty members, 6 adjunct and affiliated faculty members, 6 researchers, 115 master’s students, and 32 Ph.D. students;
·        196 students have earned master’s degrees in environmental science and management, and 8 have earned their Ph.D.s.;
·        37 students have earned MBAs with an emphasis in corporate environmental management;
·        an Economics and Environmental Science Training Program was added in 2001;
·        extramural awards to Bren School principal investigators have grown, topping $7 million in 2002-03, or almost $370,000 per faculty member.

Dean Aigner’s current term is due to conclude on June 30, 2005. Finding our next Dean for the Bren School will be such an important step in furthering its progress, we are beginning our search process now.

I am pleased to announce that a search advisory committee has been formed, and that Professor John Melack has graciously agreed to serve as chair to the committee. The roster of the committee is listed below. An announcement of the position will be circulated shortly.

I thank all those who have been part of the consultation process in the formation of this committee. I also thank the members and chair of the committee in advance for their generous commitment of time, wisdom, and energy in the important work that lies ahead.

Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
