TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that Associate Dean John T. Woolley has graciously agreed to serve as the Acting Dean of Social Sciences, effective September 1, 2002.

I am also pleased to report that Acting Provost Aaron Ettenberg and Dr. Woolley will announce the appointment of an Acting Associate Dean of Social Sciences next week.

I deeply appreciate the advice of all our colleagues whom I have consulted with in recent weeks concerning these appointments. I especially want to thank Dr. Ettenberg for his consultations with our colleagues and department chairs in the Division of Social Sciences, and for his recommendations regarding these appointments.

Dr. Woolley is Professor of Political Science, Associate Dean of Social Sciences, and Faculty Advisor to the Provost. Before joining the UCSB faculty, Professor Woolley was a member of the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis. He has also been a visiting professor at the Georgetown University School of Business. After attending Oberlin College, Professor Woolley received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Professor Woolley’s work on economic and environmental policy and political economy is widely cited, and his research has been supported by numerous grants from the National Science Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, the Minerals Management Service, the Brookings Institution, the Council for European Studies, and others. He has developed an award-winning instructional web site dealing with the American Presidency.

Professor Woolley has provided extensive service to the University in a number of roles. These include Graduate Advisor and Vice Chair of the Department of Political Science; Director of the Ocean and Coastal Policy Center in the Marine Science Institute; Director of the UCSB Washington Center (UCDC); member of the L&S Executive Committee; Chair of the National Scholarships Selection Committee for the College of Letters and Science; Chair of the Academic Senate Committee on Capital Projects; Vice Chair of the Campus Planning Committee; and Co-Chair of the Parking Plus-2 Committee. In recent years, Professor Woolley has had lead responsibility in the College for planning for the (unnamed) New Academic Building and has served as UCSB representative to the Systemwide Steering Committee for the UCDC Center.

I would like to take this opportunity to again express my sincere gratitude to Dean Edward Donnerstein for his five years of splendid service and vibrant leadership as our Dean. We appreciate the growth and distinction that he helped bring to the social sciences at UCSB. We wish him well in his new endeavor as the Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arizona, Tucson.

I will form a search committee right away to conduct a national search for our next Dean.

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Professor Woolley as he takes on his new role in our College of Letters and Science.
