TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce that, upon the unanimous recommendation of the Search Committee, Professor Loy Lytle has accepted appointment as Dean of Extended Learning Services, effective July 1, 2002.
Loy, who took a double major in Psychology and History at UCSB (BA, 1966), holds the PhD in Psychology from Princeton University. His research in developmental psychopharmacology has resulted in an extensive bibliography of publications and in awards and fellowships from the National Institute of Mental Health, the American Society of Pharmacology, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. He left an Associate Professorship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to join the UCSB faculty in 1981, and has served the Department of Psychology as Vice Chair (1990-92) and as Chair (1992-96). His service to the university reflects his wide-ranging interests, such as instructional development, TA training, minority recruitment, educational policy and academic planning, budget, and capital projects. He has always displayed a passion for classroom teaching and was named one of the Teachers of the Year for 1993-94. Since 1997, he has been a highly successful Director of Summer Sessions at UCSB and added the title of Acting Dean of Extended Learning Services on August 20, 2001.
I would like to thank the Search Committee, which, under the leadership of Professor Teofilo Gonzalez, conducted an exhaustive, nation-wide search that ended successfully with Loy’s nomination. The members of this committee are listed on the reverse side of this page. I would also like to thank the many faculty, administrators, and staff who participated in the search process for their welcome advice. In addition, I appreciate the recommendations of Dr. Ron Tobin, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Programs.
To assure the continued smooth functioning of Summer Sessions, Loy has graciously agreed to continue serving as the Director of Summer Sessions until such a time as his successor is named.
I am delighted that Loy is willing to assume the responsibilities of this important position, and I greatly appreciate his past and continuing service and leadership at UCSB.
Sincerely,
Henry T. Yang
