Dear Colleagues:
I am very pleased to inform you that Professor Art Gossard has graciously agreed to serve as Acting Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Personnel effective July 1st until the start of his sabbatical leave on September 25, 2002. Professor Gossard is well acquainted with the duties and responsibilities of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Personnel. He served on UCSB’s Committee on Academic Personnel from 1997-2001 and was a member of the 2000-2001 search committee for the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Personnel.
Professor Gossard is a highly regarded faculty member in the Materials Department and in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Professor Gossard is a member of the National Academy of Science and the National Academy of Engineering and has been a Fellow of the American Physical Society since 1970. His superb contributions to science and technology are widely recognized and honored. Among his many awards are the Distinguished Technical Staff Member Award from AT&T Bell Labs in 1983, the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize from the American Physical Society in 1984, the Leigh Page Prize Lecturer from Yale University Physics Department in 1986, and the James C. McGroddy Prize in New Materials from the American Physical Society in 2001.
Well within the next 3 months, the search for an Acting Vice Chancellor for Academic Personnel for the next academic year will be completed, with that appointment to begin before September 25, 2002.
Please join me in thanking and expressing gratitude to Professor Gossard for his willingness to serve our campus. I am delighted that he will provide the skill and leadership required to assure that academic personnel matters are handled in a thorough, thoughtful and efficient manner. I sincerely thank all those who have been part of the consultation process that lead up to this appointment.
