I am pleased to announce that Professor Steve Gaines, Department of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology and Director of The Marine Science Institute, has generously agreed to serve as Acting Vice Chancellor for Research, effective July 1, 2002. The search advisory committee for the national search for a Vice Chancellor for Research will be announced shortly and I encourage you all to participate in the nomination and recruitment process.
Dr. Gaines received his Ph.D. in zoology in 1983 from Oregon State University. From 1983-1987, he was a postdoctoral fellow and research scientist at Stanford University, where he worked on the dispersal of marine larvae by ocean currents and its impact on the ecology and management of marine populations. In 1987, he joined the faculty of Brown University and was recruited to UCSB’s Department of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology in 1994. Steve has been Director of the Marine Science Institute at UCSB since 1997. As a marine ecologist, Steve’s research is concerned with marine conservation, the design of marine reserves, the impact of climate change on marine habitats, and the coupling between ocean circulation and the dynamics of marine species. He is a lead investigator of the PISCO project (Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans), a long-term consortium studying marine ecosystems throughout the Pacific.
I would like to thank all my colleagues who participated in the consultation process that led to Steve’s appointment as Acting Vice Chancellor for Research. Please join me in congratulating Steve and letting him know how appreciative we are of his service and leadership here at UCSB.
