Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the results of our national search for the position of Vice Chancellor, Administrative Services.  George P. Pernsteiner, Vice President for Finance and Administration at Portland State University, will be our new Vice Chancellor, Administrative Services, effective August 1, 2002, pending approval by President Atkinson and The Regents.

Mr. Pernsteiner holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Seattle University and a Masters of Public Administration degree from the University of Washington.  As Vice President for Finance and Administration at Portland State University since 1995, he serves as the chief financial, business and administrative officer for a doctoral/research intensive university with 21,000 students and a total budget of more than $260 million.  Mr. Pernsteiner oversees offices responsible for budget, business affairs, information technology, telecommunications, facilities, parking, housing, student union, public safety, human resources, instructional technology, and planning.  He holds a courtesy appointment as Professor of Higher Education at Portland State University and is an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors, Portland State University Foundation.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Pernsteiner served as the Vice Provost and Chief Financial Officer at the University of Oregon, as Associate Vice Chancellor for Administration in the Oregon State System of Higher Education, and as Director of Administrative Services for the City of Seattle.

I would like to thank the dedicated and effective efforts of the Search Advisory Committee, chaired by Professor Aaron Ettenberg.  The members of this Committee are listed on the reverse side of this page.  I would also like to thank the many faculty and administrative colleagues who participated in the search process as well as offered consultations.  Please join me in welcoming George Pernsteiner to UCSB, where we look forward to his service and leadership.
