TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Dear Colleagues:

I am announcing that, after 29 years, Dean of Extended Learning Services John Maxwell has retired from UCSB. On behalf of the campus, I wish to thank John for his years of dedicated and distinctive service to our campus in so many ways. Please join me in thanking John for all his efforts on behalf of UCSB and wishing him well. I will announce very shortly the formation of a Search Advisory Committee for the Dean of Extended Learning Services to conduct a national search.

After consultation with and upon the recommendation of the Deans, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Programs, Executive Vice Chancellor, and Academic Senate Chair, I am pleased to announce that Professor Loy Lytle has agreed to serve as Acting Dean of Extended Learning Services, effective August 20, 2001. Loy holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Princeton University. His internationally recognized research is aimed at understanding the effect of various drug and nutrient chemicals on animal behavior, as well as the psychobiological mechanisms involved in childhood diseases and their treatment. Loy served our Department of Psychology as Chair from 1992 to 1996 and, since 1997, has served the campus as the Director of Summer Sessions. Loy is also widely recognized for his outstanding commitment to teaching, educational policy, and academic planning at UCSB.

While continuing to administer Summer Sessions in the successful fashion that has marked his tenure as Director, Loy has agreed to serve as the Acting Dean of Extended Learning Services, which lies within Academic Programs and is composed of UCSB Extension and Off-Campus Studies. Extended Learning Services faces a future full of promise for responding creatively to local, national, and international opportunities. I am delighted that Loy is willing to assume the responsibilities of this important acting position, and I greatly appreciate his past and continuing service and leadership at UCSB.

Sincerely,

Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
