TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce the formation of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on a UC Strategic Communications Plan.
The Chancellors of all UC campuses have been working with the Office of the President on the development of a comprehensive, strategic communications plan. UCOP recognizes that, to be effective, communications strategies must be developed in collaboration with the campuses. The committee we have formed at UCSB will be responsible for developing a framework for a long-term communications action plan for our own campus as well as for providing ideas and feedback to UCOP as the proposed systemwide communications strategy takes shape.
The need for a new UC communications strategy grows out of the findings of a statewide public-opinion poll conducted for UCOP by Hart Research Associates. The results indicate that UC needs to improve the ways in which it communicates about itself, particularly in regard to its research contributions and their impact on the state's economy; its contributions to the community, especially in the area of K-12 education; and access and affordability.
To solidify UC's natural base of support, the communications strategy will seek to address key audiences, including alumni; parents of current and prospective students; the campus communities (faculty, staff, students, retirees); educators at the K-12 level; and donors. Since we already communicate with these audiences, the challenge now is to find new and more effective ways of delivering our messages to these key groups.
I am pleased to report that Paul Desruisseaux, our Assistant Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs, and Professor Sarah Fenstermaker, have agreed to serve as co-chairs of this committee. All members of the committee are listed on the reverse side of this page.
Sincerely,
Henry T. Yang
